South Africa In T20 World Cup 2007
South Africa hosted the first-ever ICC T20 World. The tournament started with a nail-biting game between the host South Africa and West Indes. West Indies posted a massive total of 205 runs. In reply, South Africa chased down the target in 17.4 overs for the loss of 2 wickets. Herschelle Gibbs’s 90 runs helped the team to chase this mammoth total. Chris Gayle scored the first century of the T20 World cup history. He scored 117 runs.
South Africa qualified for the second round along with Bangla Desh. West Indies lost both the pool matches and couldn’t progress to the second round. Both South Africa and Bangla Desh were looking very determent to qualify for the Semi-Final of the T20 World Cup. But their dream did not come true.
In the second round, South Africa had to face India, New Zealand, and England. South Africa couldn’t make their way to the Semi-Finals. Even though India, New Zealand, and South Africa shared equal points on the points table, but due to better run-rate, India and New Zealand qualified for the Semi-Final.
SA In ICC T20 WC 2009
In 2009, South Arica was in Group D. They topped the table after beating Scotland by 13 runs and New Zealand by 1 run. In the second round, they were at the top of the list at the end of this round. They beat England by seven wickets, West Indies by 20 runs, and India by 12 Runs.
In the Semi-Final, they have to face Pakistan. Pakistan batted first and scored a modest total of 149 runs in their allotted 20 overs. In response, South Africa was in control till Kallis was at the crease. Once he got out by Saeed Ajmal, the team only managed to score 142 runs. Umar Gul was exceptional. He Bowled the 19th over of the game. His Yorkers were on target. He did not allow any of the batsmen to free their arms. In the last over, Amir defended the total, and South Africa has to go home.
South Africa Performance In 2010 T20 World Cup
In the 2010 T20 World Cup, South Africa was in Group C along with India and Afghanistan. India beat South Africa by 14 runs, and South Africa beat Afghanistan 59 runs to qualify for the second round.
South Africa faced Pakistan, England, and New Zealand. England was the dominant team by winning all the matches and led the group. Pakistan, New Zealand, and South Africa won one game each. But due to the better run rate, Pakistan qualified for the Semi-Final. And that was the whole journey for Team South Africa in the ICC T20 World Cup 2010.
South Africa-2012 T20 World Cup
In the 2012 ICC T20 World Cup, South Africa was in group C. Played exceptionally well at the group stage. Lead the table after beating the host Sri Lanka. But in the second phase of the event, South Africa couldn’t win a single match.
SA Reched Semi-Final In 2016 World Cup
The 2014 T20 World Cup was the first one that was played on the Semi-Final format. Ten teams were divided into two groups. South Africa, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, England, and the Netherlands were in group 1. India, Pakistan, West Indies, Bangla Desh, and Australia were in Group B.
Sri Lanka beat South Africa in the first match by 5 runs. The team raised to the occasion and beat New Zealand by 2 runs, the Netherlands by 6 runs, and England by three runs. All these marginal victories helped the team to qualify for the Semi-Final for the second time.
Again, in the Semi-Final, one of the T20 giants, India, beat South Africa in a close encounter to stop them from lifting the trophy. South Africa batted first and posted a handsome total of 172 on the board. India chased the target in the last over for the loss of 4 wickets.
In the ICC T20 World Cup 2016, South Africa only managed to win matches and out of the event in the first round. So, there is not much to tell about.
