The T20 World Cup journey started 14 years ago in 2007. The maiden T20 World Cup was played in South Africa, and it was the first-ever T20 World Cup with so much buzz and expectations. The first-ever T20 World Cup was held in South Africa. It was the time when teams were not taking that much seriously. That’s some big teams could not earn much reputation in the initial days of the T20 format evolvement. Australia was at its peak in that era in One day format but failed in the first two editions of the ICC T20 World Cup. And that’s how the journey began.
India Won The T20 World Cup 2007
India Won the first-ever T20 World Cup by beating its arch-rival Pakistan in the final of the T20 World Cup 2007, South
Africa. The final match of the event was played in Johannesburg. India won the toss and decided to bat first. Gotham Gambhir was the only Indian batter who showed resistance and played a notable inning of 75. India set
a target of 157 for the loss of 5 wickets.
It was a nail-biting thriller. At one stage Pakistan was down and out losing 6 wickets on 76 runs on the board. But Misbah’s brilliance and Sohail Tanveer’s thunderstorm innings
bring Pakistan into the game. Pakistan just need 13 runs in the final over of the T20 World Cup 2007 final but Misbah’s inexperience made a mess of such a great run-chase. Pakistan
remained 5 runs shy to become the first-ever t20 world cup winner. India started brilliantly and became the first champion of the T20 world cup.
Pakistan Won The ICC T20 World Cup 2009
The Second edition of the T20 World Cup was held In England. The final match of the mega event played between Pakistan and Sri Lanka, again two Asian teams were facing each other in the final.
The final of the T20 World
Cup 2009 was played at the historical ground Lords. Sri Lanka won the coin and decided to set a target. Pakistan came with a plan, Dilshan who was having the days of his life, was trapped by Pakistani Bowler Muhammad Amir.
Muhammad Amir greeted Dilshan with Short stuff. Eventually, he went for his favorite scope and caught at short leg. Sri Lankans could not recover from this blow. K. Sangakkara was the star batter who made 64(52) gave Sri
Lanka a glimpse of hope. Abdur-Ur-Razzaq was the pick of the bowlers who took 3 wickets giving away only 20 runs in his four overs.
The reply was a positive one from the Pakistan side. Chasing 138 in the final can be
tricky but the openers gave a 40 odd good opening stand. Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Malik did the rest. Shahid Afridi has scored 54 runs facing 40 balls. He and Shoaib Malik remained not out. Pakistan chased the total in
18.4 overs. Pakistan became the champion of the T20 World Cup 2009 for the first time. It was their 2nd consecutive T20 World Cup final.
England Became The Champion Of The T20 World Cup 2010
The third edition of the T20 World Cup 2010 event was held in West Indies. The match was played between Arch-rival Australia vs England. England won the toss and elected to bat first. Australia only managed to score 147
for the loss of 6 wickets. David Hussey was the star batsman of the team. He made 59 runs consuming 54 balls. Ryan Sidebottom was the pick of bowler from the England side. He took two wickets for 22 runs.
In reply, the
England team easily chased down the target without losing many wickets. In the process of the trophy of the t20 world cup 2010, England only lost 3 wickets.
Craig Kieswetter with a 63 run inning helped the team to get
over the line. This was the maiden ICC trophy that was won by England. It was a great achievement for the team and management. Steve Smith took one wicket and conceded 21 runs in his 3 overs. England becomes the ICC T20
World Cup 2010 champion.
West Indies Became The Winner Of The T20 World Cup
The 2012 edition of the T20 World Cup was held in Sri Lanka. The final match was played between West Indies and the Host Sri Lanka at Colombo (RPS), Oct 7, 2012. West Indies won the toss and elected to bat first. It was
tough going for the team and the first belonged to Sri Lanka. The last phase of the match gave West Indies the momentum for which they were looking for courtesy to Marlon Samuels’s brilliant inning. He scored 78 runs
facing 56 deliveries with the help of 6 sixes and 3 fours. The best Bowler from the Sri Lankan side was Ajantha Mendis who 4 crucial wickets for only 12 runs in his 4 overs.
In reply, the Sri Lankan team only managed
to score 101. M. Jayawardene was the top scorer who scored 33 runs in 36 balls less than a 100 strike rate. Sunil Narine took 3 wickets for 9 runs in his 3.4 overs spell. West Indies won the match by a 36 margin and the
champion for the first time.
T20 World Cup 2014 Cup Champion Sri Lanka
ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2014 hosted by Bangladesh. The finalist teams of this edition were India and Sri Lanka. The toss was won by Sri Lanka but decided to field first. Sri Lankan was exceptional once in this T20 World
Cup final as well. India scored 130 runs for 4 wickets. Virat Kohli made 77 runs for 58 balls.
In reply, Sri Lanka chased the target in 17.5 over losing 4 wickets. K Sangakkara’s 52 runs inning help the team to
get over the line. He was the man of the match. These 6 wickets win provided the team with T20 World Cup Champions.
West Indies 2nd Time Champion Of The T20 World Cup 2016
The last edition of the t20 world was held almost 5 years back in 2016. For the first Indian Soil was used for the shorter format. But this time no Asian team qualified for the final of the 2016 t20 world cup. West Indies
won the toss and decided to chase the target. England set a fighting total of 155 runs for the loss of 9 wickets. J. Root was the highest scorer on the England side. He made 52 runs for 36 balls. Carlos Brathwaite was brilliant
with the ball he took 3 wickets for 26 runs.
In reply, West Indies chased down the target courtesy to Carlos Brathwaite and Marlon Samuels. Marlon Samuels played a brilliant knock. His 85 runs inning set the plat for
the team and Carlos Brathwaite last over 4 consecutive sixes made West Indies T20 World Champion for the 2nd time. West Indies is one of the most consistent teams of the T20 World Cup history.
